Crab Pot Trees are Here!

The Crab Pot Trees have arrived and are already moving fast!
We have them in the ususal various sizes - 2,3,4, and 6' and a new size this year - a very cute little 1 1/2' table top, perfect size for a child's room.
Add something to your indoor or outdoor decorations this Christmas season.

Amaryllis - Now is the Time!

Now is the time to plant those wonderful holiday bulbs that will put on such a show amongst the poinsettias at Christmas.
We have huge bulbs now in stock in seven colors.
Plant them in a well-drained pot (not much bigger than the bulb since they like to be crowded). In  6-8 weeks those beautiful trumpet-shaped flowers will appear. Make sure when planting that a 1/3 of the bulb sits above the soil and water sparingly.

Don't forget, these bulbs are terrific, very hardy perennials that should be planted out in your gardens come spring.

The Milettia Vines are finally here!

We have waited patiently for an entire year for one of the most intriquing, aromatic vines to hit the horticulture field. We have had them every year but they are quickly bought out. Well, they are finally here at Pinecone Perennials! I am sure you have all noticed the unusal vine climbing up our arbor on the shady side of the garden center. Most people have commented on it and many others have sighed in frustration because they have wanted one after we were out of them only to have to wait until this summer for more to arrive. Well come running because they are going fast!
They are in 3 gallon containers and are priced at $22.00. They are a very hardy, deciduous vine that flowers July through August and maybe longer if the weather would cool off just slightly. The Milettia grows at a medium rate, not too fast where it will be taking over but just quick enough to start a good shady cover on your pergola or arbor after 3 seasons.
It is a wonderful, fragrant clmiber that everyone who has a overhead structure must have!

Stll Some Great Deals!

If you missed our annual sale, we still have some great deals on annuals and hanging baskets. Having a get together and need some color in the beds or have a need to freshen up your containers? The 12" Begonias, Petunias, Vinca and the Portulaca hanging baskets were $22.00 and are now $12.99 and all 4" annuals are now $2.99 ea.or 4/$10.00
We all know what a challenge this summer has been on all of our gardens. The heat has sometimes taken it's toll on various plants no matter how hard one has tried to keep them looking good. Keep up the watering, but don't forget to feed on a regular basis - you need to replace all the nutrients that are being leached out of the soil with the constant watering. We have plenty of the Peter's Excel (same fertilizer we use at our nursery and the store)  if you have seen our Supertunias this year in the window boxes on top of the arbor you will see how frequent feedings and daily watering will help.

Mother's Day suggestions

Some ideas for Mother's Day! We have a wonderful selection of hydrangeas, full of buds, some of which have been advertised in Southern Living magazine. My husband Rob, our grower for Pinecone Perennials has outdone himself with the hanging baskets - they are just beautiful and come in many varieties. Arlene has been designing some unique arrangements in baskets and fun containers they are eye catching and would make an easy selection. There are tropical hibiscus and mandevillas, saphire showers and dipladenias. There are houseplants and orchids, shrubs and trees. Which reminds me - all flowering trees are 40%  off right now.The inventory we now have of annuals can't be found anywhere -there is color and texture, the common and unusual. And of course we have gift certificates in any denomination for those who just can't choose from all the beautiful, artful selections in stock. Spectacular specimens!

Even though the Japanese maples barely show any emerging leaves, I couldn't help mayself but bring in our first shipment. Aside from the sensational color maples can afford you in the landscape, they are extremely versatile as well. Outstanding spring and fall color, intersting bark and of course those winter silouettes punctuated by their unique skeletal patterns are all features to look foward to. More to the point, is now the buds are swelling and those tiny leaves are unfolding, ready to put on their spring show. Japanese maples make outstanding container plants. Surprisingly hardy and capable of producing year around interest. Consider using them in your existing landscape. Imagine "Emperor" or "Coral Bark" in a cobalt ceramic pot sitting in the center of your perennial bed to be enjoyed all summer. Move the planter to the backyard deck or patio for a whole new scene for the winter. These portable garden sculptures are fun and add great highlights to your garden! We have many varieties in different sizes and prices. Come and drool with us...

Wordless Wednesday

An Exciting New Annual!

Catalina Gilded Grape  is one of the newest additions to our growing annual list from Proven Winners. It is one of the Torenia hybids (the common one is blue in color). This one is a butter yellow with a wonderful plum purple throat - sure to brighten any garden!

If you think about it, there aren't a lot of yellow annuals, short of the humdrum marigolds and old-timey zinnias. Well here comes a shade lover that will provide color throughout the hottest months. They thrive in high heat and humidity, so get excited and use them in hanging baskets, spruce up your window boxes and containers with an annual with heat tolerance and an extended blooming season.

Join us for an informative, exciting lecture on Bees given by  local bee keeper Craig Foskit on Saturday, March 20th at 11:00am.

Craig will show us an actual bee hive (minus the bees) and explain the equipment necessary to keep bees. We will have available some shrubs that attract bees and most importantly we will learn why keeping our bee population healthy is so crucial to our food supply and the future of all flower growing in our future.

Stay after the Bee lecture and join in on a hands-on demo of choosing the right plants for the right container. Reservations required. Please call for details 252-634-3437

"SunPatiens"!

"SunPatiens" is probably the best annual that has come along in  a long time and this is why... We all love the looks, colors and lush growth the impatiens put out and from time-to-time we have all tried to push the envelope by planting them where they are getting more sun than they really want - most times a recipe for disaster. Fast foward...
Pinecone Perennials now has the brand new introduction out called SunPatiens. This wonderful, fast growing annual is only to be used in the full sun. If you want impatiens for the shade, stick to the standard impatiens. If you are looking for a new look in your sunny garden or container planting, this annual is for you.
