Orchids Galore!

Recently my passion with orchids lead me to to the sunny state of Florida to search out quality orchid growers. I have returned with a nice mixture of orchid varieties.
We now have Phalaenopsis, Cattleya and Dendrobium orchids in different sizes available, as well as come beautiful African Violets and pretty Rex Begonias to warm your home or office with color this winter.
Mark your calendar for an exciting lecture to be given by an experienced orchid grower from The American Orchid Society and The the Piedmont Orchid Club. Saturday, February 18th at 1:00pm – you will be awed with beauty of the orchids and go home with a lot of important techniques in keeping orchids in your home!
Many more foliage plants will be arriving soon in time for our annual Pinecone Flower Show at the beginning of February. This year our theme is Tuscany. Plan on spending some time in our Tuscan court yard with a clay roof, fountains, and rosemary, complete with the Italian kitchen including wine and cheese of course, without even leaving New Bern! You can almost smell the garlic and prosciutto!
Stay tuned for details and an exact “Tuscan” date…

HELPFUL HINT FOR YOUR SHRUBS THIS WINTER

As we all know we have not had much rain lately and we have had delightful warmer temperatures, both scenarios add up to our evergreens drying out.

I strongly suggest getting out in your garden on this beautiful weekend and giving your gardens a good drink, especially if you have newly planted shrubs. Any shrub needs at least 6-9 months to grow roots deep enough to get their own moisture, so if you have done any planting last fall or  even at the end of the summer, take care and spend a little time protecting your investments.

Listen… don’t you hear your shrubs sighing thank you?

PROTECT YOUR PLANTS!

Beware of the wonderful weather we have been having! Having spent more time in my gardens lately because of the beautiful, warm, sunny days, I have noticed lots of new growth on various perennials and some evergreens. Very exciting and beautiful to see, however… When the temperatures drop well into the 20’s and possibly in the teens during the next few nights, all of this new fragile new growth needs protection.

Take the time and effort to cover these plants with new growth with old beach towels, bedding or frosts cloths if you have them. This covering will hopefully give the protection the plants need for the next 3 or 4 very chilly nights!
