Non-Stop Color in Shade

If you are looking for riotous color all summer long for your hanging baskets, patio planter or shade gardens, I can’t think of a more suitable plant to use than the Tuberous and Rex Begonias. They also make exceptional houseplants because of their showy flowers that bloom continually for many months. But even more exciting is the fantastic foliage that some of them possess. Some resemble stained glass windows with their unique patterned leaves – nothing less than a work of art! We have a new shipment in the greenhouse waiting for your oohs and ahhs…

2011 Perennial of the Year

One perennial every gardener in our area should consider is Amsonia Bluestar. It is a new plant out on the market that we will be offering this spring and are quite excited about. Besides the masses of blue flowers, the fine green texture in the spring through summer turns a gorgeous amber shade in the fall.

Your garden would benefit from this wonderful 3 season perennial. Contact us for availibility. It is a full low-mid -sized shrub that attracts butterflies but most thrilling is that it is drought resistant and DEER RESISTANT!.

Crazy about Camellias!

Amidst all the dull and dreary outside our door, has been a shining star for  most of the winter – our southern favorite, the Camellia.
It makes me smile to look out my window and see all the colorful blossoms in the whites, reds and pinks in the snow, a cold rain and even when the thermometer dips so low the petals shine with a thin layer of ice.
More special attributes of this wonderful shrub: it is evergreen, is available in low-growing, mid-sized and tall varieties and very important to all of us in this area- the camellia is deer resistant, That is worth reporting!

Delicious Daphne

It is so exciting to walk through the garden and catch a whiff of a delicious scent. Not knowing at first where it is coming from, you continue to search and then right in front of you appear the bright, pink buds amongst the glossy leaves of the treasured Daphne.
This is a special shrub for a shady area and preferably near the garden path or at an entrance where one could enjoy the wonderful scent of it’s blossoms.
Our Daphne are all in bud and just starting to show the wonderful pink color of their blossoms. Remember this evergreen variety if you need to add some color and fragrance to  a low light area of your garden.

Forcing Branches for Indoor Color

Lets bring spring inside to make us smile until the actual season finally arrives…
The shrubs that naturally bloom in the spring  are good choices:
Forsythia, Flowering Quince, Crabapple, Plum, Cherries, etc.
Six weeks before they bloom naturally is a good time to cut some branches making sure the buds are already swelling. The warmest time of day is the best time to cut when there is sap in the branches. Choose the branches with the largest buds remembering to be selective, as you are actually pruning the plant and want to leave it with a good shape.
Soak the entire branch overnight in the bathtub to make it easier for the buds to open.
The next day, give the branches a fresh cut and arrange them in a vase with warm water. Remember to change the water daily.
It is so exciting to enjoy spring indoors just a bit earlier!
