When everything in your garden world is looking bleak, cold and not even trying to help you smile, add some Helebores (Lenton Rose) to your shade garden or better yet, place a few in a basket or container where you can see them daily. We have a wonderful selection of quart size Helebores available now.
As you can see by the photo, their different shades of pinks, cream, burgundy and sometimes a pale green along with their dark, shiny foliage with a serrated edge are a real welcome this time of year.
This beautiful, evergreen perennial starts blooming in January and will continue usually through March and sometimes later during a cool spring.
There are few perennials that can rival the seasonal interest of hellebores ... often called Christmas or Lenten Rose. These staples of the winter garden are among the most coveted of garden plants by those who know them, yet they are still relatively unknown outside of plant enthusiast circles.
Hellebores have long been grown in gardens, although originally for their medicinal properties. Hellebores are filled with alkaloid toxins and have been used both as a poison and a purgative. Because of their toxicity, Hellebores are prized as " deer-resistant " garden plants for areas suffering from deer.
Hellebores are renowned for their tolerance of drought and neglect, although they truly thrive when grown in a moist, but well-drained soil. If you keep your plants in containers, be aware they are very heavy consumers of water when actively growing in the fall and spring months, but not when they go into a non-active growth state during the heat of summer.
ORCHIDS ARE MY PASSION!
Did you know, the traditional orchid enthusiast, as opposed to the more casual hobbyist was often a character, full of passion and quirky obsession? (that explains my character flaws) In years gone by, people had to go to extraordinary lengths to satisfy their hobby. Deceit and theft were not unheard of. Today, none of those things being the case, you can immerse yourself in our display of orchids and other houseplants that will rival no other in southeast N.C.
Come see our greenhouse in it’s winter time glory. Just breathing in the beauty of the orchids and their surroundings will help you forget the drabness of winter!
